Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence is a key French wine appellation of the Provence wine region in the far south-eastern corner of the country. Côteaux d'Aix-en-Provence wines are rosé, red and white, in that order of importance. The rosés and reds are made from a complex blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, and Counoise, with Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon permitted to constitute up to 30 % of these blends combined.

La Commanderie de la Bargemone enjoys all the benefits of a Provençal terroir, including pebble-rich clay/limestone soils to promote grape ripening. The climate is typically Mediterranean: dry, sunny and swept by the Mistral, cooling the vines and protecting them from disease. The vineyards here date back to the 13th century. Their altitude gives them their own microclimate, slightly cooler than their surroundings, which means harvesting can be held back by up to 15 days. This can be a significant advantage, as it gives the wines good colour and helps concentrate aromas.

Organic viticulture demands precision and consistency. La Commanderie de la Bargemone organic farming is a cornerstone of their philosophy, and it requires rigorous and constant monitor in the vineyards and in the winery

The Wine

Bargemone Classic Rose AOP Coteaux D’Aix En Provence 2023

The Bargemone Classic Rose is 100% organic. It is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Counoise.

Syrah adds a lovely pink colour with a discreet glimmer of blue, and excellent, fruit-led aromatic complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon is not widely used in Provence, especially in rosés, but this late-ripening variety delivers freshness, acidity and red berry flavours. What makes Classic rosé stand out from the crowd though, is its use of Counoise. This is an oldish variety which fell into obscurity for a while, but is now used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It’s a late-ripening grape with little depth of colour, but shows a broad range of flavours including spices and florals.

The grapes were harvested at night to keep their freshness. The grapes were cooled again, and pressed. The musts were then vatted and cold-soaked for two weeks at temperatures of 2°C, before commencing fermentation at 16°C. Each variety is vinified separately. Wines are blended in December and bottled early the following year.
